History of some of our Classic Cakes

  • Baileys Irish Cream Cake has only been around since Baileys was created by Gilbeys of Ireland, in 1974. Just like many other flavoured cakes, chefs of the era decided to jazz up the sponge with a wee dram of available liqueurs on the market, hence Baileys was added, especially for St. Patrick’s Day.
  • Black Forest cake (gâteau) is the English name for the German dessert, Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, literally “Black Forest cherry-torte”, where it originated.
  • Chocolate Ganache is a mixture of chocolate and cream, that it was invented around 1850. It has been debated for years whether it was a Swiss Artisan Baker or a Parisian Patisserie who invented it
  • Chocolate Grand Marnier Cake: is flavoured with Grand Marnier which is an orange-flavored liqueur created in 1880 by Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle. It is made from a blend of Cognac brandy, distilled essence of bitter orange, and sugar.
  • Chocolate Mousse Cake: Spanish and French chefs have been cooking with chocolate since the early 17th century. Chocolate Mousse (mousse au chocolat), which means ” chocolate foam”, originated in France in the 18th century.
  • German Chocolate Cake: Is not German, but rather American: German chocolate cake, originally German’s chocolate cake, is a layered chocolate cake from the United States. It owes its name to an English-American chocolate maker named Samuel German, who developed a formulation of dark baking chocolate that came to be used in the cake recipe.
  • St Honore Cake: The St. Honoré cake is named for the French patron saint of bakers and pastry chefs, Saint Honoré or Honoratus. It was invented in 1847 at the Chiboust bakery on Rue Saint-Honoré in Paris.
  • Tiramisu Cake: Tiramisu (Italian for “pick me up”, “cheer me up” or “lift me up”) is a popular coffee-flavoured Italian custard dessert. Invented in the 1960s in the region of Veneto, Italy, at the restaurant Le Beccherie in Treviso, Italy by confectioner Roberto Linguanotto
